Diet and Weightloss ArticlesA Low-Purine Diet
The last few weeks have been far away from the ordinary for this writer for different reasons. Changes here and there. Events here and there. Add to that some unexpected news and you'll see that this writer has been having a very interesting summer thus far. I've been diagnosed to have a case of kidney stones, or basically inorganic stones that have crystallized in my kidneys. I saw a doctor because I had some blood in my urine four times during the last two weeks alone, and my folks are, of course, not so happy about it. At one point, I also became worried because when I urinate blood, I really mean lots of it. I got myself tested using an ultrasound and it showed that I really have a stone in my kidneys. And although I will still be tested using a CT scan to check if there are any other causes for the gross hematuria, I was already prescribed a month's worth of medicine in order to dissolve the stone in my kidney. On top of that, I was told that I have to maintain a low-purine diet. At first I was a bit skeptical because I thought low-purine diets are only for those who are suffering gouts, but I eventually learned that it's possible to have kidney stones due to excess purine in the body. There are a lot of dietary restrictions, sure. I am banned from eating mussels, meat extracts, sardines, yeast, and gravy. I am also advised to eat in moderation, of all food items, poultry, soda beverage, fish, meat, oatmeal, and butter. That leaves me with vegetables (although I am also advised to not eat certain types), eggs, breads, cereals, and cheese. During the last four meals after I had been advised what to eat, I got only eggs, tomatoes, and bread for meals. While I don't really mind for now, I wonder until when can I sustain this kind of diet. I've always been a large consumer of meat, so significantly reducing my meat consumption can make a big loss.
