In economics, the law of diminishing returns tells us that the more access we have to a particular good or service, the less likely we are to derive satisfaction from it over time. This is true, right? When you eat a particular food item daily and without interruptions, we are likely to dislike the food after a week or so. Some even end up hating that food for the rest of their lifetimes.

Can we use this knowledge to our own advantage and lose weight by eating the same food over and over again? Well maybe by that time comes you will have to deal with your weight, which has been enlarged by eating the same fattening food for over a week. How about just imagining that you are eating that food all the time? Will it work. Apparently it does.

According to a recent study by Science magazine, people who visualize themselves eating a food that they desire over and over again are likely to avoid eating it at all. Imagine that delicious-looking steak or dessert and you will likely develop an appetite to feast on it. But imagine yourself eating that same steak or dessert bit by bit. That may likely give off the opposite effect.

The psychologists from Carnegie Mellon University tested 51 undergraduate students and had a certain subset imagining that they are eating M&M's for thirty times, while another one only 3 times. Afterwards, they were given the chance to eat M&M's from a bowl. Those who imagined eating 30 times were more likely to actually eat M&M's than those who imagined it only 3 times.

This is not just a measure at losing weight. This is also a measure at reducing your food costs. Imagine saving about $15 every month. This wouldn't sound much, but if you invest that in a fund with an interest of 6% annually, that will turn out to over $50,000 in 30 years. You've lost the urge to eat a particular food item while saving money. Not bad eh?
