You may be surprised, but chocolates are actually good for our health! Well, not really as it all depends on the composition of the chocolate bar that you are eating and the amount that you consume obviously. Cocoa, from which chocolate is made, is actually a fruit and, hence, it also has the health benefits common to many dark plants.

 

Most notably, cocoa is found out to contain a high level of flavonoids, which act out as antioxidants in the body. Antioxidants are said to protect ourselves from aging and cancer by getting rid of free radicals. In this regard, we can say that consumption of a healthy amount of chocolates may be good for our health. Aside from the antioxidant benefits, eating a small bar of chocolate every day has also been proven to be effective in lowering cholesterol and blood pressure. The fats contained in cocoa are also found to be the variety that does not affect cholesterol.

Restrictions apply. Chocolates are still high in fat and high in calories. This is no excuse to give you the permission to eat a kilogram of chocolates every day. You still have to meet your daily caloric limit and eat your chocolates in accordance with the food pyramid. And if you are really concerned about health benefits and antioxidants, your choices are limited to dark chocolates, which have about 65% or higher cocoa content than other kinds of chocolates.

You should also skip fillings and other additions other than nuts, such as nougat, milk, and caramel, all of which just add unnecessary sugar and calories to your chocolate intake. None of these give any additional antioxidant effect to your chocolate so if you are concerned about the calories, stop the nougat.

A small bar of dark chocolate every single day will definitely not hurt. It's about time you make it the daily dark chocolate habit.
